One crisp monday morning, I set off for Alipur Zoo with my beloved mother, accompanied by our ever-cheerful driver, Gobindo Uncle. We traveled by road, the ride filled with anticipation, lively banter, and a few nostalgic stories that made the journey as delightful as the destination. Gobindo Uncle, with his warm smile and quirky anecdotes, made sure the ride was both comfortable and fun—truly setting the perfect tone for the day ahead.
As we approached the zoo’s entrance, I was immediately struck by the sight of the enormous signboard welcoming visitors, and the distant calls of exotic birds that echoed the vibrant spirit of the place. Passing through the entrance, I noticed families and children brimming with excitement. Their wide-eyed wonder and cheerful chatter reminded me of my own childhood, making me feel a deep sense of connection with the joyous energy around me.
The moment we stepped inside, my eyes were drawn to a lively enclosure where a group of playful monkeys was causing delightful chaos. Their mischievous leaps and playful antics had me grinning from ear to ear. I couldn’t help but think that the monkeys, in their own funny way, were setting the pace for the day—reminding me to always look for joy in the little things.
Just a short walk away was a spacious aviary filled with an explosion of colors from a variety of parrots and mynas. One particularly cheeky parrot tilted its head at us in a seemingly friendly greeting, as if saying, “Welcome to our world!” I paused to absorb the burst of vibrant hues and the soothing, melodic chirps that filled the air.
Not too far from there, in an open grassy area, a small herd of deer was grazing peacefully. Their graceful, gentle movements and the serene way they enjoyed the day made me feel a quiet sense of calm. I remember one of them raising its head just as if to acknowledge our presence—a tender moment that left a lasting impression.
The day was sprinkled with unexpected, unforgettable moments. Near the monkey enclosure, I witnessed a scene that could easily have been lifted from a comedy show. A little boy, completely absorbed in the excitement of his visit, accidentally dropped his packet of spicy chanachur. In a flash, one of the clever monkeys swooped in and snatched it right from him! The crowd burst into laughter. Although the little boy’s initial shock was evident, his smile returned quickly, and the incident became a source of playful teasing between my mother and me as we marveled at the monkey’s “snack game.”
Later on, while strolling near the bird enclosure, we encountered a couple trying to capture the perfect selfie with a brilliantly colored macaw. The bird, casually perched on a branch, seemed utterly indifferent to their frantic posing. My mother couldn’t help but chuckle, remarking, “That macaw is definitely the star here, not them!” The light-hearted moment brought an extra spark to our day, leaving us both in fits of laughter.
While the zoo was bursting with fascinating animals, nothing compared to the overwhelming awe I felt when I came face-to-face with the mighty Bengal tiger. Standing before its enclosure, I was mesmerized by its majestic orange coat, accented by bold black stripes. The tiger’s intense, piercing gaze and the graceful way it moved left my heart pounding with a mix of admiration and respect. It was as if time had momentarily paused, allowing me to appreciate the raw beauty and power of this magnificent creature.
And then there was the rare white tiger—a sight almost too magical to believe. With its pristine white fur and delicate black rosettes, it resembled a creature from a fairy tale. Watching it stroll gracefully along the edge of its enclosure, occasionally glancing our way, I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of wonder and gratitude for the opportunity to witness such a majestic being up close.
Alipur Zoo wasn’t just a collection of animal enclosures—it was a vibrant sensory experience. Lush greenery, towering centuries-old trees, and winding paths beckoned exploration at every turn. A serene lake at the heart of the zoo, with graceful waterfowl gliding on its surface, added an air of tranquility that perfectly balanced the energetic surroundings.
After exploring for a while, hunger started to make its presence felt. Luckily, the zoo had several food stalls offering everything from refreshing cold drinks to tasty snacks. My mother and I treated ourselves to some local delights—I opted for a spicy packet of puffed rice while my mother enjoyed a cold, refreshing beverage. We took a break under a shaded spot, relishing our treats and sharing memories, all while soaking in the bustling yet harmonious atmosphere around us.
As the afternoon gave way to the gentle glow of the evening, I felt a bittersweet tug at my heart. Our day at Alipur Zoo had flown by in a delightful whirlwind of laughter, awe, and heartfelt moments. Every encounter, from the playful monkeys to the majestic tigers, had added a unique chapter to my personal journey—a journey that I will cherish for years to come.
On our drive back home with Gobindo Uncle, the car was filled with quiet contentment and lingering excitement from the day’s adventures. Glancing back at the zoo one last time, I felt immense gratitude for the experiences shared with my mother, and for the little joys that make life so wonderfully unpredictable.
